Composed of three installations– a primordial forest lost to deforestation, a mobile home (created in collaboration with BA Harrington), and an exhausted horse – Ground Clearance imagines a re-staging of westward migration, contemplates the belief of Manifest Destiny, and examines how Frederic Jackson Turner's 1893 Frontier Thesis resonates with attitudes and realities of 21st century (north) America.
The conversations that inspired these works took place over multiple westward roadtrips with BA and during a Wingate residency at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
