This work explores how deeply held grief usurps the body and makes one strange to oneself. Just as a darkroom “fixing” bath never truly suspends the moment of the photograph, so too is the future self to whom the photograph is addressed in an ever-changing inflection between present and past; a looping gesture of drift.

Freud defined melancholy as a failure to grieve. This work posits that this looping, shifting, sinking, floating, drifting oceanic state might be a source of resistance and transcendence; it is not a flaw to be fixed nor is there a “normal” to which one might return.

The filming of the Weeping Woman was an experimental, improvisational, and deeply felt collaboration with Jill Casid in which the exercise of making art made something else entirely.
